You can't fix a broken system …

Integrative Psychiatry practices taught by the Center for Integrative Psychaitry is based on a clinical theoretical model that effectively captures and navigates an individual through human experiences. This theoretical model, developed by Dr. Nicholas Hatcher, is the first to appreciate human complexity and heterogeneity and effectively translate this into an organized approach to wellness optimization while addressing the mind, body, and spirit.

… If it's based on a broken model.

Our model guides the organization of course material ...

  • In this module, you’ll learn the foundations of Integrative Psychiatry, including a focus on how care can be improved by sharpening diagnostic reasoning skills, analyzing the evidence base, and implementing change through the use of quality improvement science. The strengths and weaknesses of the conventional model will be critically appraised.

  • In this module, you’ll learn how to analyze behaviors effectively using the behavioral chain analysis. By extension, you’ll learn how to bridge an individual from behavioral change to behavioral transformation by incorporating skills learned from the field of axiology (the study of values). You’ll leave this module with effective tools for implementing behavioral change and transformation.

  • In this module, you’ll also explore a synthesis of relevant neuroanatomy and physiology into a practical application format to enhance your conceptualization of brain networks and patient teaching methods. Analyze neurotransmission using advanced laboratory and diagnostic studies to identify areas for support beyond psychotropics. This content will set the stage for conceptualizing syndromic phenotypes and our analysis of pharmaceutical and nutraceutical treatment options.

  • In this module, you’ll learn about key body systems influencing the brain and how to analyze and treat these systems effectively using advanced interview, screening, laboratory, and diagnostic techniques. These systems include the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, the gut-brain axis, detoxification, the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis, metabolism, the immune-brain axis, and epigenetics.

  • In this module, you’ll learn how to analyze the elements making up the sum total of environmental exposure and how to address them in the plan of care. You’ll receive focused content on lifestyle modifications in the domains of relationships, leisure, labor, nutrition, exercise, sleep, substance use, and spirituality.

  • This final module emphasizes how individuals frame their experiences and construct the narrative of their life stories. You’ll learn how to examine and support personality, the conceptualization and experience of the Self, and spirituality. Finally, you'll learn how to tailor integrative psychiatry treatment to each condition.

Meet the Founder

Dr. Nicholas Hatcher is a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and dually board-certified acute care (AGACNP) and psychiatric mental health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). He completed his acute care and doctoral education and training at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He then completed a post-doctoral degree in psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

Fascinated by the relationship between the body and the mind and the discrepancies he recognized in the mental healthcare system, Dr. Hatcher continued his academic journey to include a specialized focus on Integrative Psychiatry and Traumatology. He has completed a Fellowship in Integrative Psychiatry and pursued several continuing education opportunities in functional medicine and psychiatry to refine the execution of an integrative model in psychiatry. In his search for a unified and practical model for integrative psychiatry that captures the emergent behaviors of complex systems, Dr. Hatcher has synthesized a theoretical model to serve as the basis for Integrative Psychiatry practice. In his model, he translates dynamic system interrelations into an organized approach that appreciates the uniqueness of each individual and supports the personalization of care.

After appreciating the tremendous benefits of this model in his practice and the need for Integrative Psychiatry community development, Dr. Hatcher became motivated to create the Center for Integrative Psychiatry. Through his extensive experience as an educator, as a dually board-certified provider, and as a caring and compassionate individual, Dr. Hatcher aims to expand the delivery of Integrative Psychiatry.
